Sikander (Bobby) Malik – Vice Chair
Sikander has been involved with Equalities work since 1985, when he joined Central Scotland Racial Equality Council as a member of the Management Committee. Between 1985 and 2000 he served as Chairperson or Vice Chairperson for a total of eleven years. During this time he was also a member of various sub-committees and represented CSREC on a wide range of external Public and Voluntary Sector organisations.
He has established and maintained strong links with local communities and during his time with CSREC, has been a key figure in helping to set up and support many community groups and projects which include Central Scotland Community Interpreting Group, Falkirk and Stirling Urdu Education Projects, Stirling Islamic Cultural Centre and Forth Valley Language Support which is now a Community Interest Company providing Language Support in over forty languages helping Minority Ethnic Communities to access Public Services. He also contributed to the setting up of the RAHMAS Group which later became the MAHRS Group.
In May 2000 Sikander joined Slough Racial Equality Council as Deputy Director of Racial Equality and held this post until July 2002. During his time at SREC Sikander set up and managed the translation and interpreting service (STAIS).
In 2002 Sikander was appointed Head of Community Languages and Translation Services at Hounslow Borough Council where he was also part of the senior management team responsible for the Council’s Equality and Diversity Policy. He held this post till his return to Scotland in December 2010.
A qualified linguist and holder of three Public Service Interpreting Diplomas, Sikander has been a freelance interpreter (Urdu & Panjabi) for thirty years. He is a DPSI programme tutor and has delivered interpreter training for a wide range of Institutions such as the Immigration Appellate Authority, Moray House Edinburgh University, Oxfordshire County Council and Reading Borough Council and UNHCR. He is also a registered examiner with the Chartered Institute of Linguists. He is currently a Director of Forth Valley Language Support CIC.
