Central Scotland Regional Equality Council (CSREC) has received funding from the Scottish Government’s Equality Unit to deliver the project Equality in the Community, which seeks to tackle hate crime, discrimination and also increase participation of people and communities affected by these so they are supported to participate in and engage with services and civic society in Central Scotland.
Aims of the project
The Equality in the Community project aims to reduce the negative effects of inequality, hate and marginalisation experienced by persons from the ethnic minority communities, LGBTI persons and disabled persons living and working in Central Scotland, covering the areas of Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire. It will take an intersectional approach to these issues and will address the challenges faced by those with multiple protected characteristics, especially women and children.
The project will also engage with local community groups to discuss and address their experiences and concerns. It will strive to act as liaison between them and partner public and third sector agencies to ensure that practical solutions to these concerns are developed and delivered.
As agreed with the Scottish Government’s Equality Unit, it is anticipated that the Equality in the Community Project will have delivered on the following outcomes by the time of its completion on 30 June 2017:
- People covered by hate crime legislation experience lower levels of hate crime.
- Individuals from ethnic minority communities, LGBTI persons and persons with disabilities will experience less discrimination and will have reduced barriers to participation in civil society.
- People and communities are supported to participate in and engage with services and civic society; their contribution is recognised and community cohesion is increased.
